ALICE SPRINGS, Australia (AFP) - England were struggling in their tour match in Alice Springs on Friday, losing six wickets to a modest bowling attack a week out from the second Ashes Test.
At tea on the opening day of a two-day match against a Cricket Australia Chairman s XI, England were 152 for six off 58 overs.
Jonny Bairstow and Graeme Swann were both not out on three.
The tourists were sent into bat and failed to take advantage of the hot conditions losing the wickets of Michael Carberry (6), Joe Root (22), Matt Prior (19), Ben Stokes (28), Gary Ballance (55) and skipper Ian Bell (13).
Ballance, bidding to force a place in the England team at number six for next Thursday s second Adelaide Test, was run out in a mix-up with Bell nearing tea.
Three overs later Bell was out to a diving catch from teenager Jake Doran leaving Swann to bat out the remaining five minutes to the tea interval.
Medium-pacer Simon Mackin had taken two for 24.
