Summary Pakistan steadily progressed to a healthy 352-4 at lunch.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Captain Misbah-ul-Haq frustrated South Africa s ambition with a gritty half century as Pakistan stretched its first innings lead to 103 runs on the third day of the first cricket test on Wednesday.

Pakistan steadily progressed to a healthy 352-4 at lunch with Misbah looking solid on 78 with seven fours and Asad Shafiq, after a cautious start, on a fluent 40 with four boundaries.

Shafiq cut and pulled Kallis for two boundaries in one over to the frustration of the top-ranked test team in the world and has so far dominated the 62-run stand with his skipper.

South Africa was bowled out for 249 in its first innings.

Resuming at the overnight 263-3, Pakistan lost only overnight centurion Khurram Manzoor, who slashed at a wide delivery of Vernon Philander (2-50) and was well caught by Jacques Kallis in the second slip.

Manzoor s brilliant 146 off 266 balls was Pakistan s highest individual test knock against the Proteas with 15 fours and spanned almost 6½ hours. Azhar Mahmood held Pakistan s previous record when he made 136 in Johannesburg in 1998.
Manzoor added 112 runs for the fourth wicket with Misbah.

South Africa had hoped to rattle the Pakistan middle-order with the second new ball, but Manzoor and Misbah started off the third day with confidence.

Misbah completed his half century off 85 balls his fourth 50 in the last five tests when he drove Philander to square leg and ran two before Manzoor departed.

Philander is the pick of the bowlers with 2-50, but top-ranked paceman Dale Steyn has bowled 21 overs and has yet to get his first success. Left-arm spinner Robin Petersen (0-111), who was occasionally reverse swept by Misbah, provided little threat.
