Summary Proteas are playing without their best fast bowler Dale Steyn.

CARDIFF (AP) - South Africa won the toss and choose to bowl first against India in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy.

Proteas paceman Dale Steyn misses out with a side strain, while Graeme Smith (injured) and Jacques Kallis (personal reasons) are big names who weren't selected in the South Africa squad for the tournament.

Top-ranked India won both its warm-up matches, against Sri Lanka and Australia, heading into the Group B opener at Sophia Gardens as the national team looks to deliver some respite in the midst of a spot-fixing scandal back home in the Indian Premier League.

The reigning world champions have left out batsman Murali Vijay.
