Captain Brendon McCullum blasted his way from 44 not out overnight to 74 as New Zealand added 58 runs in 43 minutes before declaring. Bruce Martin took his overnight score from 17 to 41 before his was the last wicket to fall.
McCullum and Martin put on 77 for New Zealand s eighth wicket in a brisk partnership which tightened its grip on the first match of the three-test series.
The New Zealand captain reached his half century from 47 balls with a hooked six off Stuart Broad which flew out of the University Oval.
James Anderson took 4-137 for England and Broad finished with 3-118.
