Summary Pakistan were all out for 338 in first innings of second day of second test against South Africa.
CAPE TOWN (AP) - Vernon Philander claimed his ninth five-wicket haul in his 15th test for South Africa, but a spirited ninth-wicket partnership boosted Pakistan to 338 on day two Friday of the second test at Newlands.
The visiting side was bowled out on the stroke of lunch, with Philander finishing with figures of 5-59 from 26 overs.
Philander struck in the second, fourth and sixth overs of the day to reduce Pakistan from 253-5 overnight to 268-8, but Tanvir Ahmed and Saeed Ajmal put on 64 for the ninth wicket to keep the innings rolling.
Spinner Robin Peterson eventually ended the stand when he dismissed Ahmed for 44, before bringing the innings to a close by bowling last man Mohammad Irfan.
Philander s statistics in test cricket have been phenomenal since he made his debut in November 2011, but he has been particularly successful on his home ground.
He has taken 26 wickets in four tests at Newlands at an average of 12.30, and it was no surprise that he made early inroads on Friday.
His first delivery of the day was edged through to Graeme Smith at first slip by Asad Shafiq, who failed to add to his overnight total of 111.
Sarfraz Ahmed was brilliantly caught at third slip by Alviro Petersen in Philander s next over, before Umar Gul became the seamer s fifth victim when he was trapped lbw.
However South Africa was made to work hard for the final two wickets as Ahmed and Ajmal put up resistance for more than 18 overs.
The pair s willingness to attack eventually proved their downfall, however, when Ahmed attempted to clear mid-off and was instead caught by Philander.
Ajmal was left unbeaten on 21, with Pakistan having added 85 runs to its overnight total.
