Summary Javed Miandad has left for Sri Lanka to motivate Mohammad Hafiz's side, ahead of the T-20 World Cup.
Talking about his role Miandad said, My main task is to go there and try to motivate the players and raise their confidence. If any player is having any technical issues he can come to me for advice.Miandad, however, made it quite clear that he wasnt going to take over the role of the support staff already present in Sri Lanka, Let me make one thing clear there is a full support staff with the team in Sri Lanka. Dav Whatmore looks after the batting, Mohammad Akram after the bowling and Julian Fountain is for fielding. I am not going there on any coaching assignment. The former skipper, will be in Sri Lanka until the 18th of September and is likely to return home before the tournament actually starts. The PCB has said Miandad is going there to have discussions with the players and give them advice on how to cope with the pressures of a World Cup. One official added more clarity to his role by saying, He is not going there as a batting coach.Although the role given to Miandad is a positive one, some former Test players arent seeing much positivity in the decision. One such player remarked, I dont know whether it is a wise move since what sort of message is this conveying to Whatmore that the board is losing confidence in his abilities to motivate and life the team.
