England slaps life ban on Danish Kaneria

Summary The England and Wales Cricket Board has imposed a life ban on Pakistani leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.

The two boards Friday declared Danish and Mervyn Westfield guilty of spot-fixing in a case against them.Westfield was given a five-year ban, although he will be able to play club cricket in the final two years of his suspension.In a statement an ECB disciplinary panel said: “We regard Danish Kaneria as a grave danger to the game of cricket and we must take every appropriate step to protect our game from his corrupt activities.“Accordingly, we are unanimously of the view that the only appropriate sanction in relation to both charges is one of suspension for life and that is the sanction we impose.“This means from today Danish Kaneria is suspended from any involvement in the playing, organisation or administration of any cricket under the jurisdiction of the ECB.”The England and Wales Cricket Board has found Pakistani legspinner Danish Kaneria guilty of two spot-fixing charges during an English county match.The ECB says English bowler Mervyn Westfield has pleaded guilty to one charge.The ECB says it will announce sanctions against the two former Essex players later Friday.Kaneria was accused in a British court in February of pressuring Westfield into spot-fixing during a match against Durham on Sept. 5, 2009.Westfield pleaded guilty and was jailed for four months.Kaneria has been suspended from international cricket by the Pakistan Cricket Board since 2010 soon after allegations of spot-fixing surfaced.
