The match was reduced to 42 overs due to rain.Lower order batsman Lahiru Thirimannes unbeaten 42 helped Sri Lanka reach a modest 135-8 in the rain-shortened first one-day international against Pakistan on Thursday.Coming in at 41-5, Thirimanne hit three boundaries in 73 balls and put on a 50-run stand for the eighth wicket with Nuwan Kulasekara (18) in a match restricted to 42 overs per team because of rain at Pallekele International Stadium.Paceman Mohammad Sami was the pick of the bowlers with 3-19 from six overs, while quick Umar Gul claimed 3-24 from nine. Part-time spinner Mohammad Hafeez took 2-20 from 10 overs.Gul took the opening three wickets with a fast and accurate spell. Tillekeratne Dilshan was dropped at extra cover but was tempted to go over the top in the next over, the fifth, and was caught by Saeed Ajmal for 5 after failing to clear the mid-on fielder to make it 8-1.Captain Mahela Jayawardene, who had earlier won the toss and elected to bat first, was caught behind off a no-ball. But the reprieve was short-lived as Gul trapped him leg before wicket for 3 with only four runs added to the total.Gul accounted for Dinesh Chandimal for a duck when the batsman dragged the ball onto his stumps with the total on 23 in the ninth over.Sami replaced Gul and trapped Kumar Sangakkara lbw for 9, before having Angelo Mathews caught for a duck at first slip by captain Misbah-ul-Haq to leave the Sri Lankans on 41-5.The game was interrupted twice due to rain. Either side of the breaks, Sri Lanka lost Upul Tharanga (10) and Thisara Perera (17) to Hafeez.Apart from the wicket-takers, Sohail Tanvir troubled the batsmen by swinging the ball at a good pace to put the batsmen on the back foot.
