ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Sugar Exports, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, has finalised the mechanism for exporting 200,000 metric tonnes of sugar.
According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, the meeting also approved the formation of a monitoring committee to regularly oversee domestic sugar prices.
Ishaq Dar directed the relevant ministries and departments to accelerate the implementation process and complete all pending regulatory formalities without delay.
The deputy prime minister said the measures were aimed at supporting the sugar industry and sugarcane growers while increasing foreign exchange earnings and protecting the interests of domestic consumers.
The meeting reviewed arrangements for the export of sugar and discussed measures to ensure that exports do not adversely affect the local market.
The approved monitoring mechanism is intended to keep a regular check on sugar prices in the domestic market as the export process moves forward.
Dar instructed the relevant authorities to coordinate closely and ensure that the decisions taken by the committee were implemented within the required timeframe.
The government has maintained that the export mechanism seeks to balance the interests of sugar producers and farmers with the need to ensure adequate supplies for consumers in the domestic market.
The decision comes as the sugar sector remains an important part of Pakistan’s agricultural and industrial economy. Sugarcane is a major cash crop and supports a large number of farmers and workers associated with the sugar industry.
According to the Foreign Office, the export decision is also expected to contribute to foreign exchange earnings by enabling the country to sell surplus sugar in international markets.
At the same time, the monitoring committee will oversee domestic prices to help safeguard consumers and keep track of market conditions during the export process.
The relevant ministries have been directed to complete the remaining regulatory requirements and expedite implementation of the export mechanism.
The meeting represents the government’s latest effort to manage sugar exports while maintaining a balance between producers, growers, consumers and the country’s foreign exchange requirements.
