Summary Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has directed PASSCO to immediately supply wheat to provinces under ECC-approved quotas as Pakistan moves ahead with plans to import up to one million tonnes.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday directed the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) to immediately release wheat to the provinces according to quotas approved by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC).
The directive was issued during a meeting chaired by Dar to review the country's wheat stocks and supply situation.
The meeting reaffirmed the government's decision to import up to one million metric tonnes of wheat to strengthen domestic supplies.
Under the plan, 250,000 metric tonnes of wheat will be imported in the first phase, with the first shipment scheduled to arrive in November.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister's Office, the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has been directed to immediately initiate the wheat import process.
Dar appreciated coordination among the provincial governments, Ministry of National Food Security and Ministry of Commerce over the planned imports.
He also instructed PASSCO to ensure that wheat allocated under the ECC-approved quotas was provided to the provinces without delay.
The deputy prime minister directed provincial authorities to ensure timely payments and lifting of their allocated wheat stocks to maintain an uninterrupted supply.
The measures are aimed at ensuring adequate wheat availability across the country and strengthening stocks through planned imports.
