ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The formal process for the approval of the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year is scheduled to officially commence in the National Assembly today (Sunday).

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb will present 135 demands for grants totaling over PKR 104.14 trillion in the National Assembly for final approval.

Out of these, 88 demands amounting to over Rs 43.85 trillion are expected to be approved without any cut motions. However, the opposition is preparing to challenge a significant portion of the budget through detailed cut motions.

According to details, opposition members will submit 587 cut motions on 47 demands totaling more than Rs 60.29 trillion.

Several ministries and divisions are also under scrutiny during the process. The Cabinet Secretariat and its attached departments face 91 cut motions on 19 demands. The Energy Division’s six demands, worth over Rs 661.26 billion, will be debated with 116 cut motions.

The Ministry of Finance itself will face 100 cut motions on demands exceeding Rs 42.82 trillion, while the Ministry of Interior is subject to 123 cut motions on four demands totaling more than Rs 74.35 billion.

Additionally, the Poverty Alleviation Division, with allocations exceeding Rs 859 billion across three demands, will see 45 cut motions moved by the opposition.

The budget approval process is expected to continue over the coming days amid detailed debate, scrutiny, and political contestation in the assembly.
