ISLAMABAD (Zeeshan Yousafzai) – Pakistan has stepped up efforts to secure its petroleum supply chain amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with authorities arranging oil reserves for June after already ensuring supplies for May.
According to official documents obtained by Dunya News, the country is maintaining petroleum stocks with a buffer of nearly one-and-a-half to two months to avoid any disruption in fuel availability.
The documents show that Pakistan has secured 446 metric tons of crude oil for June. Of this amount, 296 metric tons will be imported while 150 metric tons will be sourced from domestic oil fields.
In addition, 201 metric tons of diesel have been arranged for June through local refineries, a quantity considered sufficient for around nine days. Authorities have also secured 98 metric tons of petrol from domestic sources.
The government has further arranged 18 metric tons of jet fuel, enough for 10 days, while JP-8 fuel reserves sufficient for 12 days have also been secured. Around 18 metric tons of LPG has likewise been arranged for June.
Officials said petroleum products were being secured in advance, while additional quantities would continue to be acquired over time to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies across the country.
Most of the currently secured stock will come from local production, while further imports will be sourced when needed from countries including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, the United States and several African nations.
A senior official from the Petroleum Division told Dunya News that Pakistan was currently focusing on increasing output from local refineries to reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.
The official added that once regional tensions ease, the Petroleum Division plans to introduce broader measures aimed at boosting domestic production and moving Pakistan closer to self-sufficiency in the energy sector.
