Summary Finance minister Aurangzeb avoids predicting electricity prices, citing ongoing subsidy discussions, while confirming Pakistan has met IMF targets ahead of a board decision.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has refrained from stating whether electricity prices in Pakistan will rise or fall, saying discussions on subsidies are still under way.

Speaking during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance, the minister avoided giving a clear answer when asked about the future of electricity tariffs and whether subsidies were being withdrawn.

Aurangzeb noted that Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari and the Prime Minister were continuously working on the matter, adding that further discussions on electricity subsidies would take place in the coming days.

During the session, committee members questioned whether electricity would become cheaper or more expensive. In response, the finance minister said he could not comment definitively at this stage.

The discussion comes amid reports that subsidy structures for consumers using up to 200 units of electricity are being revised as part of broader economic reforms.

Aurangzeb also referred to the upcoming board meeting of the International Monetary Fund, stating that Pakistan has met its targets and that approval of the next tranche of funding depends on the Fund’s board decision.

The uncertainty surrounding electricity pricing reflects ongoing negotiations and policy adjustments tied to fiscal discipline and international commitments.
