Cabinet approves bill to clip HEC chairman’s wings

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The federal cabinet on Monday clipped wings of HEC chairman by approving Higher Education Commission (HEC) Amendment Bill 2023.

The cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden and expressed deep regret over the martyrdom of six security personnel in Balochistan.

The meeting was federal cabinet held at the Prime Minister’s House, the country’s political and economic situation was reviewed in detail.

In addition to other agendas, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Amendment Bill 2023 was approved.

The federal cabinet also gave approval in principle the legislation for the Pakistan Land Port Authority.

The private security regulatory bill was also approved besides the agenda of the national sports policy 2022 to 2027 and proof of registration for Afghan refugees could not be presented in the cabinet meeting.

In the meeting, the issuance of NOC for the transfer of World Food Organisation equipment from Karachi Port, amendments in the National Commission Human Development Ordinance, amendments in the Federal Urdu University Ordinance 2022 and the Islamabad Solid Waste Management Plan were also accepted.

According to sources, after the HEC Amendment Bill 2023, the Prime Minister will have the power to remove the Chairman HEC before the term of office.

Following the proposed amendment, the HEC will be the sole regulatory authority of higher education institutions across the country and the clause that the position of the chairman of HEC is equal to the federal minister was also blown, after the 18th amendment, the powers of the commission were further weakened.
