WAPDA grants approval for award of Mohmand Dam contract

The procurement process has been completed through open competitive bidding

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Following a comprehensive bidding and evaluation process and exhaustive technical negotiations, the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) in a meeting held today accorded approval to award contract to CGGC-DESCON Joint Venture (JV) for civil and elctro-mechanical works of Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project.

The authority also directed the project authorities to issue Letter of Acceptance (LoA) as per the rules. Consequent upon signing of the agreement, the contractor will mobilize at site in March 2019.

It is worth mentioning here that WAPDA has been able to successfully realign Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project after a delay of decades, removing the legal, financial and technical snags.

The procurement process has been completed through open competitive bidding following the transparent best practices in line with PPRA rules and PEC provisions.

Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project is historic and unique in nature being constructed on River Swat in Tribal District Mohmand of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. The project is scheduled to be completed in five years and eight months.

On completion, the project will store about 1.2 million acre feet (MAF) of water, generate 800 megawatt (MW) of low-cost hydel electricity and help mitigating floods in Peshawar, Charsadda and Naushera.

Besides, supplementing 160,000 acres of existing land, more than 16,700 acres of new land will also be irrigated because of Mohmand Dam. In addition, 300 million gallon water per day will also be provided to Peshawar for drinking purpose.

The project will significantly contribute towards development of agriculture, industrial, economic and social sectors in the country besides alleviating poverty and providing job opportunities to the locals in the project area. Annual benefits of the project have been estimated at Rs51.6 billion.
