Asad Umar discusses launch of Sukuk with Islamic Banks representatives

The finance minister appreciated the increasing role of Islamic Banks in the overall banking sector

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Finance Minister Asad Umar on Thursday chaired meeting of senior representatives of different Islamic Banks on matters pertaining to launch of Islamic Sukuk by the government (PHPL).

The meeting discussed the launching of Sharia compliant bonds to ease out liquidity of power sector.

The consortium will coordinate with the government for the launch of the bonds. Most of the work has already been done except for minor irritants that will be removed soon, sources said.

During the meeting representatives of the Islamic banks apprised the meeting about the progress for the subject launch. They also informed that most of spade work had already been completed and there were minor irritants left to be removed.

The finance minister appreciated the increasing role of Islamic Banks in the overall banking sector and their potential for providing strength to economy.

He assured the delegation of all out support from the government for the planned launch of Islamic Sukuk which aims to generate sufficient finances to ease out liquidity of the power sector.

The meeting was also attended by Federal Minister for Power Omar Ayub Khan.

In this respect, out of Rs734 billion of payment arrears from private consumers identified as of End-September 2018, the government will develop a comprehensive plan for the recovery of them in the first 6 months this will yield about Rs70 billion from recovery of stocks and improvement in current recovery and losses.

The plan will have a reduction in the losses up to 1 percent and improvement of recovery to 3 percent from the current levels, yielding Rs140 billion within a year.
