Onion exports decrease by 5,000 tonnes within a week

Summary Pakistan is struggling with onion exports against competitors due to cost of production

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Onion exports have lowered by at least 5,000 tonnes from November 16 to November 21, Dunya News reported Monday.

Statistics show that onion exports have dropped by 5,000 tonnes in the past week. Karachi vegetable market association’s president Haji Shah Jehan said that newly harvested crop in India have decreased onion supplies.

Pakistan is struggling with onion exports against competitors due to cost of production.

It should be mentioned here that in the ongoing year, Pakistan has exported 5 lac tonne onions worth at least USD 22 crore.

In first week of November, the product’s exports had increased twofold. The exports had swollen as India’s production was lower then which benefited Pakistan. Demand for Pakistan-produced onions had increased in the international market.

Pakistan’s export total had hit above five lac tonne until then. The food product price was set at USD 400 per tonne in the international market.

The importing countries include Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
