TOKYO (AFP) - Japan, South Korea and China will hold a three-way meeting of their finance chiefs and central bankers this week in Australia, Japan s finance ministry said Tuesday, one of the highest-level contacts in recent years.

The meeting will be held on Friday in Cairns on the sidelines of talks involving finance ministers and central bank governors from the Group of 20 global economic powers, the ministry said.

"The meeting is likely to cover macro economic issues and possible financial cooperation in the region," a ministry official said.

The three countries traditionally held talks during the annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank, but they been called off in the past few years amid political discord over territorial and history-related issues.

Tokyo set off a diplomatic row with Beijing nearly two years ago by nationalising some disputed islands in the East China Sea.

Relations between Tokyo and Seoul are also at a low over disputes related to Japan s harsh 1910-45 colonial rule over the Korean peninsula.
