LAHORE (Dunya News) - Sindh Governor Syed Nehal Hashmi has praised the Punjab government for its transparency, saying he has not witnessed a government as transparent as Punjab’s elsewhere.
He called for political cooperation and said democracy required all stakeholders to work together.
Speaking to the media at the Lahore Press Club here on Saturday, Hashmi appreciated the role of journalists in promoting truth, justice and social accountability. He described the Press Club’s initiatives as exemplary and paid tribute to journalists for their commitment to society.
The governor said that journalists continue to play an important role regardless of which political party is in power. He acknowledged the challenges facing the media and stressed the need for stronger communication between the government and journalists.
Hashmi also praised former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his contributions to Pakistan's development, particularly the construction of the motorway network and efforts to strengthen the constitutional framework and rule of law. He said Lahore had undergone significant development over the years and that people in Karachi also appreciated Nawaz Sharif's services.
Commenting on corruption, the governor described mental corruption as the first form of corruption, explaining that denying people their rightful entitlements was also a serious injustice.
Hashmi further stated that he would not support any legislation that violated human rights and emphasised that national issues should be resolved through parliament. He also urged society to take responsibility in areas where government institutions could not reach.
Speaking about Karachi, he highlighted the city's historical and economic importance, pointing out that despite contributing substantial taxes, it did not receive its fair share of resources. He called for institutional accountability and said corruption should be addressed according to the law rather than personal preferences.
The Sindh governor also criticised the recruitment of ghost employees in public institutions, saying such practices had damaged the country's institutions and undermined public trust.
He concluded by emphasising the importance of justice, transparency, responsible governance and cooperation between institutions and society.
