NCCIA arrests 274 in Karachi call centre raid

The NCCIA arrested 274 people in a Karachi call centre raid, recovering 339 laptops; authorities said the city has up to 350 scam call centres.

KARACHI (Dunya News) - The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) raided a call centre in a plaza on Shahrah-e-Faisal and arrested 274 people, including 100 women and 42 teenagers. A case has been registered.

NCCIA Additional Director Shehzad Akbar said the suspects allegedly used accounts under different names to commit fraud. Investigators recovered 339 laptops during the raid.

He said the suspects used fake identities to defraud foreigners and also targeted local residents.

Cybercrime officials said between 300 and 350 scam call centres were operating in Karachi. They said cybercrime was increasing, with traditional offences also shifting online, and that offenders could conceal their identities across borders.

Officials said a girl who had been victimized in a dark-web case was recovered a few days earlier, and that other significant operations had recently been conducted. They described cybercrime investigations as technical in nature.

They said concealing one’s identity and using fake identities to empty people’s accounts was illegal. Officials added that action was being taken against all scam call centres in Karachi.

According to officials, the raided business was one of three major companies, and action had previously been taken against it. They said earlier operations had focused on owners, but the latest case had been registered against the entire network after suspects resumed operations following previous action.
