Govt to provide LPG subsidy to low-income families through BISP

Updated on:

The government plans LPG price relief for low-income families through BISP, while opening imports to competition and introducing transparent pricing for consumers.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The government will provide relief on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices to deserving families through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said on Wednesday.

In a statement, Malik said the international market price of LPG translated into around Rs450 per kilogram in Pakistan, but some market players had been charging excessive prices.

He said the government would take steps to make LPG available to consumers at lower rates and was opening imports to competition.

Under the proposed arrangement, all companies importing LPG would be required to display their prices on their websites to ensure transparency, the minister said.

He added that locally produced LPG would be supplied through an auction process to promote competitive pricing.

Malik said the government was also working to maintain gas supplies across the country during December and January, when demand rises because of colder weather.

Separately, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had directed the government to ensure that energy-related decisions did not place an additional burden on the public.

He said the federal cabinet had approved the decisions concerning the LPG sector and that the government was taking steps to reduce the financial pressure on consumers.
