Elon Musk releases first instalment of AI-generated 'Odyssey' film project

Updated on:

Elon Musk has released a seven-minute preview of an AI filmmaking project inspired by Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, with a full-length film targeted for completion by the end of 2026.

CALIFORNIA (Dunya News) – Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has unveiled the first instalment of an artificial intelligence-generated film project inspired by the ancient Greek epic The Odyssey, offering a glimpse of how AI could reshape filmmaking.

The video, running for more than seven minutes, was shared by Musk on X, where he also invited users to provide feedback on the project.

Musk said the production uses Grok Imagine, an AI system developed by his company, xAI. Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker are also involved in the project, according to the report.

Musk had previously announced plans to produce a complete AI-assisted film before the end of 2026. He said the project would seek to remain consistent with historical facts and Homer’s original epic, although no confirmed release schedule for subsequent instalments has been announced.

Musk’s criticism of Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’

Musk has also criticised acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, particularly its casting choices.

His objections included the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as Sinon. Musk argued that Helen’s traditional portrayal as a woman of extraordinary beauty was central to the story and its account of the Trojan War.

His comments prompted debate over casting, historical representation and the adaptation of classical literature for modern audiences.

AI’s growing role in filmmaking

The new project adds to the wider discussion about the potential impact of generative AI on the entertainment industry.

AI tools can assist with visual effects, animation, scene generation and other production tasks, potentially changing how films are developed and produced. However, questions surrounding creative control, historical accuracy, copyright and the role of human artists remain central to the debate.

Musk’s project will offer a further example of how AI-generated content may be used in feature-length storytelling as filmmakers and technology companies explore new production methods.
