Trump weighs deal with Iran or decisive action, says US has a choice

Updated on:

US President Donald Trump says Washington faces a choice between reaching an agreement with Iran and taking decisive action, while claiming major damage to its nuclear facilities.

WASHINGTON (Dunya News) — US President Donald Trump has said Washington must choose between reaching an agreement with Iran and taking decisive action against the country, as tensions between the two sides continue.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump framed the issue as a choice between striking a deal with Tehran and pursuing an approach aimed at ending the Iranian threat permanently.

The US president claimed that Iran had made little significant progress regarding its nuclear facilities and that most of the country’s nuclear infrastructure had been destroyed.

Trump also said the United States was closely monitoring activities at locations he identified as Pickaxe Mountain and Mount Al-Fas in Iran.

He criticised the nuclear agreement negotiated under former US President Barack Obama, describing it as the worst deal.

The 2015 nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), placed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. The United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018 during Trump’s first presidency.

Trump claims control over Strait of Hormuz

Discussing maritime security, Trump claimed that the United States had complete control over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway through which a substantial share of global oil supplies normally passes.

He also asserted that commercial activity through the strait had increased compared with the period before the war.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and serves as a critical route for oil and gas shipments from major Gulf energy producers.

Any sustained disruption to shipping through the passage could affect global energy markets, transportation costs and oil prices.

Oil prices expected to fall after war, Trump says

Trump predicted that oil prices would fall sharply once the war ended.

His remarks come amid continued uncertainty over the conflict, Iran’s nuclear programme and the security of energy infrastructure and maritime routes in the region.

A potential agreement between Washington and Tehran could have implications for regional security, sanctions and international energy markets. However, the president’s statements did not establish whether a new agreement was imminent or what specific terms any proposed deal might contain.
