CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - South Africa has set a new record for operating the world’s longest freight train, with state-owned rail operator Transnet Freight Rail running a 7.6-kilometre train on its iron ore export route.
The record-breaking train comprised 696 empty freight wagons, multiple locomotives and crew coaches. It operated on the country’s iron ore export line linking the mining region in the Northern Cape with the port of Saldanha.
The achievement highlights the technical and operational challenges involved in controlling an exceptionally long train. Rail authorities said coordinated braking and power systems were essential to maintaining control throughout the operation.
Australia previously held the record after operating a freight train with 682 wagons in 2001. South Africa’s latest run has now surpassed that benchmark, according to the report.
The achievement underscores the role of specialised rail engineering in moving bulk commodities efficiently from mining areas to export ports.
