Updated on:

PM Shehbaz Sharif welcomed Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu at an official ceremony in Islamabad featuring national anthems, a guard of honour and a tree-planting ceremony.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – President of the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday was presented with a guard of honour at the Prime Minister’s House upon his arrival to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and hold high-level delegation talks.

Prime Minister Shehbaz warmly welcomed the Maldivian president as he arrived at the formal welcome ceremony.

The national anthems of Pakistan and Maldives were played as the two leaders stood at the salute dais.

The smartly-turned out contingent of the Pakistan armed forces presented a guard of honour to the visiting dignitary, which he reviewed.

Following the ceremony, the two leaders introduced their respective delegations before proceeding to one-on-one and delegation-level discussions.

President Muizzu, who arrived here on Tuesday for a three-day state visit along with First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level delegation comprising cabinet members and senior officials, also planted a sapling in the lawns of the PM House.

This is the first visit by the President of Maldives to Pakistan in eleven years, which shows special significance as the two countries commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1966.

During the visit, President Muizzu will also meet President Asif Ali Zardari, who will host a state banquet in his honour.

A number of agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering diverse areas of bilateral cooperation are expected to be signed during the visit.
