ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – A suspect in the case involving the death by suicide of student Laiba Ijaz has died in hospital after being wounded during a firing incident involving a police team in Islamabad, according to police.
The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the capital's Ramna police station while the suspect, identified as Muhammad Nauman, was being taken for the recovery of evidence.
Police said four armed men on motorcycles opened fire on the team in an alleged attempt to free him from custody.
According to police officials, Nauman was being taken to a location for the recovery of evidence based on information he had provided during questioning. During the journey, four armed motorcyclists who had allegedly concealed themselves along the route launched indiscriminate gunfire at the police team.
Officials said the attackers intended to secure Nauman's release from police custody. During the exchange of fire, the detained suspect was wounded by bullets allegedly fired by his own accomplices.
The police personnel escaped injury, with officials attributing their safety to bulletproof jackets and other precautionary measures in place at the time of the incident.
Following the firing, the injured suspect was immediately shifted to hospital for medical treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
Nauman had been named as an accused in the case concerning Laiba Ijaz, a student who died by suicide within the jurisdiction of the Ramna police station in Islamabad.
The latest incident occurred while investigators were pursuing evidence connected to the case. Police have not provided further details about the precise nature of the evidence they were seeking to recover when the attack took place.
Following the incident, police launched search operations to trace and arrest the four armed men who allegedly opened fire on the team before fleeing the scene.
Investigators are continuing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those involved. Police are also pursuing leads to locate the suspects who escaped after the shooting.
