Khalistan referendum held in Canada, anti-India slogans raised

EDMONTON (Dunya News) - Anti-India slogans echoed in Edmonton, Alberta, as Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) organised a referendum-style event on Sunday, seeking support for the establishment of an independent state of Khalistan in Indian Punjab.

According to Dunya News, polling took place outside the Alberta Legislative Assembly, where thousands of Sikhs from Canada and the United States gathered to participate.

Long queues formed outside the polling centre as voting continued until 5 pm.

Participants raised slogans calling for the creation of Khalistan and protesting what they described as Indian aggression. A large number of Sikhs took part in the referendum-style exercise.

Sikhs for Justice, led by prominent Sikh activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, has previously organised similar referendum-style events in support of Khalistan, a proposed independent state in India's Punjab region.

Meanwhile, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reportedly warned Pannun of an imminent threat to his life.

Pannun said FBI agents visited his residence in New York City to inform him of the alleged threat ahead of his planned visit to Canada to attend the Khalistan referendum.

The event in Edmonton is part of a series of overseas referendum-style campaigns organised by SFJ to garner support for Khalistan among Sikh communities abroad.
