Sindh launches embryo transfer programme to improve livestock breeding

Updated on:

Sindh has launched a modern embryo transfer-based breeding programme to improve livestock quality, increase milk and meat production, and strengthen the province’s livestock sector.

KARACHI (Dunya News) – The Sindh government has introduced a livestock breeding programme based on modern embryo transfer technology to improve animal breeds, enhance milk and meat production, and modernise the province’s livestock sector.

The initiative has been launched through a collaboration between the Sindh Livestock Department and a private company. Provincial Livestock Minister Muhammad Ali Malkani inaugurated the programme, according to a report published on Thursday.

Speaking at the inauguration, Malkani said embryo transfer technology could help produce improved livestock breeds in a shorter period and enhance animals’ productive capacity.

He explained that improving high-quality livestock breeds and spreading their desirable characteristics had traditionally taken several years. Modern breeding technology, however, could accelerate this process and help farmers achieve better results within a shorter timeframe.

The minister said breeding improvements could contribute to higher milk and meat production by making superior-quality animals available more quickly.

He added that modern breeding methods could help bring animals with better productive characteristics to markets sooner, potentially improving the availability of higher-quality meat.

Malkani also said the technology could create opportunities to supply better-bred and heavier animals ahead of Eidul Azha, when demand for sacrificial livestock increases.

According to the minister, improvements in animal genetics and productivity could benefit livestock farmers financially while supporting the supply of quality meat to consumers.

The provincial minister emphasised the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors in promoting modern livestock technologies and increasing productivity.

He invited investors to explore opportunities in livestock farming, modern farm management and breeding, describing modern livestock farming as a potentially profitable business.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Livestock Secretary Dr Kazim Jatoi, Director General Livestock Dr Nazir Kalhoro and representatives of the private company involved in the initiative.

The programme aims to use modern technology to improve livestock breeds, increase milk and meat output, and encourage advanced breeding practices across Sindh.

Its broader impact will depend on implementation, access for farmers, breeding outcomes and the programme’s ability to make improved animals and technology economically accessible.
