Iran to respond to US through intermediaries after reviewing Hormuz proposal

Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran continued to exchange messages with Washington through intermediaries, with Pakistan and Qatar playing a role in facilitating mediation

TEHRAN (Dunya News) – Iran is reviewing a US response to its proposal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and will convey its reply to Washington through intermediaries once the assessment is complete, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, Baghaei said Tehran continued to exchange messages with Washington through intermediaries, with Pakistan and Qatar playing a role in facilitating mediation between the two countries.

Baghaei also highlighted Iran’s longstanding cooperation with Russia across various fields, including nuclear-related matters, saying Tehran had a long history of engagement with Moscow.

He said Iran had consistently welcomed assistance and support from friendly and partner countries, while accusing the United States and Israel of seeking to undermine the security of Iran’s borders.

The spokesperson said Washington and Tel Aviv were seeking to destabilise Iran, describing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a defensive response to US and Israeli attacks rather than an attempt to exert pressure.

Baghaei maintained that Iran’s position on the strategic waterway was consistent with international law. He added that Tehran could not guarantee security in the Strait of Hormuz as long as the US naval blockade remained in place.

The Iranian spokesperson also expressed deep concern over an increase in attacks by Yemen’s Houthis against Saudi Arabia.

Emphasising the need for diplomatic engagement, Baghaei said Iran was prepared to help facilitate the start of negotiations between the parties.

He said continued war and hostility between two Muslim countries was undesirable and urged all sides to resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiations.
