Two held in scholarship fraud case linked to student's suicide

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Police on Saturday claimed to have arrested a man and a woman in connection with forged documents related to a foreign university scholarship linked to a student's death by suicide.

Laiba Ijaz, a gold medalist from the International Islamic University Islamabad, was found dead in the capital a day earlier. Police are investigating her suspected suicide and allegations that a man posing as a government official deceived her family with fraudulent university admission documents after taking money intended to finance her studies abroad.

According to sources, Islamabad Police arrested the nominated fraud suspects and launched an investigation. Police have also obtained CCTV footage, in which the girl who allegedly committed suicide can be seen walking through a street.

Earlier, FIA Anti-Human Trafficking Circle had registered a case against two people.

The FIA Anti-Human Trafficking Circle registered a case for receiving Rs9.3 million on the pretext of providing a US visa and scholarship. Muhammad Noman and Fatima Sarwar had been named in the case.

Similarly, FIA officials said that out of the amount collected, Rs2.9 million was paid through Laiba Ijaz's bank account, while the remaining amount was received in cash.

The FIR stated that the victim, Laiba Ijaz, died during the alleged financial fraud and the resulting mental anguish.
