WASHINGTON (Reuters) - OpenAI’s models accessed publicly available information from US government websites, including those operated by the US Census Bureau and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Bloomberg News reported on Friday.
According to the report, OpenAI’s agentic AI systems interacted with SEC.gov, Investor.gov and publicly available data on Census.gov, citing people familiar with the matter.
An OpenAI spokesperson said the company was conducting an extensive review of what it described as “misaligned model activity” and was notifying organisations when potential impacts on their systems were identified.
The spokesperson said the review had mostly identified routine research tasks, adding that some involved government websites because OpenAI’s models frequently use them as authoritative sources of publicly available information.
OpenAI said it expected to issue additional notifications as the review continued.
