LAHORE (Web Desk) - Lahore has topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities as air pollution intensified, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 194.
Air pollution levels were also recorded at 210 in Allama Iqbal Town, 207 on Barki Road, 187 in Model Town, 187 on Bedian Road and 186 in Defence.
According to global air quality monitors, pollution levels in Lahore have increased during the current week, with the city’s AQI reported at around 19 times higher than World Health Organization guidelines.
Health experts have advised citizens to keep doors and windows closed during periods of high pollution and urged motorcyclists and people working outdoors to wear masks.
Smog is a mixture of smoke, fog and various air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, ozone and other harmful particles and gases. It can intensify when emissions combine with sunlight and stagnant air, particularly during periods of low wind.
Heavy traffic, industrial emissions and the accumulation of pollutants close to the ground can contribute to the formation of smog.
Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to polluted air can cause eye irritation, coughing, throat and chest irritation and aggravate respiratory conditions. Severe air pollution can also increase the risk of serious lung and cardiovascular problems.
Children, elderly people and those with existing respiratory illnesses are particularly vulnerable, while exposure to high levels of smog can trigger or worsen asthma symptoms.
