LAHORE (Dunya News) - Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Dr Farooq Sattar has said administrative units or new provinces have become necessary to ensure effective governance and address public issues.
He was speaking at the inaugural session of the 16th National Youth Peace Festival held at a private hotel in Lahore. More than 300 young people attended the two-day event.
Addressing the gathering, Sattar said an effective system was needed to devolve powers to the people and resolve their problems at the grassroots level. He said whatever constitutional or administrative mechanism was available to address public grievances should be adopted.
The MQM-P leader said his party was demanding changes to the local government election system under Article 140A of the Constitution. He said the purpose of local government elections was to transfer authority to the grassroots so that elected representatives could resolve people's problems through effective devolution of power.
Sattar reiterated that the MQM-P stood for empowering the people and transferring decision-making powers to the grassroots level.
According to the organisers, the two-day National Youth Peace Festival aims to encourage youth participation in decision-making, promote social harmony and foster interfaith dialogue.
Member of the National Assembly Romina Khurshid and MQM-P Youth Punjab President Qasim Bukhari also attended the ceremony.
