LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an alert across the province as the ninth and final spell of monsoon rains is expected to affect several districts from today until September 17.
According to the PDMA spokesperson, rain is expected in Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang and Attock on Saturday. Lahore, however, is likely to remain hot and dry, with temperatures ranging between 27°C and 36°C.
From Sunday through September 17, rain is expected in Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib and Sargodha.
Rain is also forecast for Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan and adjoining areas.
PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa has warned of possible landslides in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas and directed commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain on high alert.
The PDMA chief also warned of a risk of urban flooding in major cities, particularly Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad. Flash flooding may also occur in rain-fed streams and nullahs.
Relevant departments, including health, irrigation, communication and works, local government and livestock, have been placed on alert to deal with any emergency situation.
The PDMA has advised citizens to take precautionary measures during the spell of bad weather. People have been urged to avoid staying in weak or dilapidated buildings and refrain from unnecessary travel during thunderstorms and strong winds.
Residents have also been advised to seek shelter in safe places during lightning and keep children away from low-lying areas, standing water and electricity poles.
