WASHINGTON (Web Desk) - The United States has decided to maintain the deployment of some of its military forces in the Middle East through 2027, the Wall Street Journal has reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to the report, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered that certain American forces currently deployed in the region remain in place until 2027.
Around 50,000 US troops are currently deployed or on alert across the Middle East, including air defence units, fighter aircraft, naval vessels and other military personnel and assets.
The report said the deployment of some personnel from the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division has also been extended through 2027.

The decision has reportedly prompted concerns among some senior US military commanders, who have raised questions internally about the impact of prolonged deployments on troop readiness and the US military’s ability to maintain defence capabilities in other regions.
The development comes only days after reports that the Pentagon was considering reducing the US military presence in the Gulf once the conflict in the Middle East comes to an end.
The reported decision to extend certain deployments indicates that Washington may be preparing to maintain a significant military presence in the region despite any potential reduction in forces elsewhere.
The United States has maintained a substantial military footprint across the Middle East for decades, with its forces playing roles in air defence, maritime security and regional deterrence.
