(Web Desk) - Apple’s new CEO John Ternus took charge of the technology giant, succeeding Tim Cook and bringing an end to Cook’s 15-year tenure at the helm of one of the world’s most valuable companies.
Under Cook, Apple’s market value soared to about $4.6 trillion, driven largely by the continued success of the iPhone and the company’s expanding ecosystem of products and services.
Ternus takes over at a crucial moment for Apple as the technology industry undergoes a major transformation driven by artificial intelligence.
The AI boom has created the biggest disruption in the sector since Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone in 2007.
Apple has struggled to keep pace with some of its rivals in AI, particularly after delays and setbacks in delivering new features that it had promised nearly two years ago.
The company has sought to regain momentum by unveiling new AI capabilities, including upgrades to its Siri voice assistant, while emphasising privacy and practical everyday applications as it works to narrow the gap with competitors.
Ternus, a veteran hardware engineer, will face challenges extending well beyond his traditional area of expertise.
Along with strengthening Apple’s position in the AI race, he will have to manage complex global supply chains and maintain relationships with influential political figures, including US President Donald Trump.
Cook developed a close working relationship with Trump while steering Apple through several business challenges, including the former president’s trade and tariff policies targeting Asian countries where the company relies heavily on manufacturing.
Although Cook has stepped down as CEO, he is expected to remain involved in helping Apple maintain its relationship with Trump after moving into the role of executive chairman.
Ternus is no stranger to Apple’s biggest products. During Cook’s tenure, he worked on devices including the Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro.
His first major public test as CEO will come next week when he is expected to lead Apple’s latest iPhone launch at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.
