ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari on Monday apologised to the public for electricity loadshedding during nighttime hours, saying a sharp increase in demand coupled with gas shortages had affected power generation and forced authorities to undertake load management.
Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Leghari said electricity demand had increased significantly during nighttime hours, making load management necessary as the available generation could not fully meet requirements.
The minister said a shortage of gas had also affected electricity generation, adding pressure to the country's power supply system.
He acknowledged the difficulties faced by consumers and appreciated the public for showing patience during the disruption.
Leghari said the government was making efforts to provide maximum relief to consumers and improve electricity availability.
However, he clarified that areas suffering from high levels of electricity theft were facing additional loadshedding. The government has repeatedly linked electricity supply in high-loss areas with recovery levels and efforts to curb power theft.
The minister also referred to the gas supply issue involving Qatar, saying efforts were underway to resolve the matter as soon as possible.
He said the government was taking necessary measures to increase electricity generation and improve the overall performance of the energy sector.
The latest loadshedding comes at a time when uninterrupted electricity supply remains crucial for households as well as commercial and industrial consumers. Any prolonged shortage can add to public hardship and increase operating difficulties for businesses already facing high energy costs.
The minister's apology also highlights the continuing challenge of balancing electricity demand with available generation and fuel supplies, particularly during periods of sudden increases in consumption.
Leghari maintained that the government was working to address the constraints and improve conditions in the power sector.
