WASHINGTON (Dunya News) — Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, has accused India of attempting to distort the structure and history of the Indus Waters Treaty, insisting that the agreement remains in force.
In an article published in an American journal, Sheikh said compliance with the treaty was mandatory for both Pakistan and India and that the agreement contained no provision allowing either side to suspend it unilaterally.
"The Indus Waters Treaty is still in force and applicable to both parties," Sheikh wrote, adding that Pakistan remained committed to implementing the agreement.
The envoy said India's unilateral actions posed a threat to peace and security in South Asia, without providing further details.
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed by India and Pakistan in 1960 with World Bank involvement, governs the sharing of waters from the Indus river system between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
