TEHRAN (Dunya News) - Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani arrived in Tehran on an official visit, where he held talks with Iranian leaders on the situation in the Middle East and escalating tensions in the region.
According to reports, the Qatari premier also met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran.
The discussions focused on the latest regional developments, efforts to reduce tensions and the prospects for restoring maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting also covered a proposed joint Iran-Qatar project to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz.
The two sides also discussed possible arrangements for establishing a temporary maritime corridor to ensure the safe passage of vessels through the strategic waterway.
The talks included efforts to de-escalate tensions, create conditions conducive to dialogue and intensify efforts to promote security and stability across the region.
The Qatar-Iran engagement comes at a time when commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted.
The strategic waterway is a critical global route for the transportation of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), with around 20 percent of global oil and LNG supplies passing through the strait.
Qatar’s diplomatic engagement with Tehran reflects ongoing regional efforts to address the security situation and seek arrangements that could facilitate the resumption of safe maritime traffic through the vital waterway.
