Apple has unveiled its next-generation M6 chip alongside the powerful M5 Ultra processor, bringing significant performance and artificial intelligence (AI) improvements to its Mac lineup.
The M6 will power the base-model Mac mini, while the M5 Ultra will be offered exclusively in the Mac Studio. Both chips continue Apple’s focus on improving performance, efficiency and on-device AI capabilities, while delivering substantial gains over earlier Apple Silicon generations.
The M6 is particularly notable because it is Apple’s first processor built using a 2-nanometer manufacturing process. The company says the new chip is designed for students, developers and everyday users who need strong performance for demanding workloads while maintaining efficient background processing.
The M6 features a 12-core CPU, comprising two performance-focused super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores. Apple claims single-threaded performance is up to 1.2 times faster than the M5 and up to 2.4 times faster than the original M1.
The chip also includes a 12-core GPU, with each core equipped with a Neural Accelerator for AI workloads. Apple says GPU compute performance for AI is nearly 30% faster than the M5. The company has also improved the shader-core architecture, Dynamic Caching and hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which should benefit graphics-intensive applications and games.
Apple says the improvements could deliver smoother gaming performance, including in demanding titles such as Cyberpunk 2077.
The M6 supports up to 32GB of unified memory and provides memory bandwidth of up to 170GB/s. That represents a 10% increase over the M5 and roughly 2.5 times the bandwidth offered by the first-generation Apple Silicon chips. The higher bandwidth allows the processor to move more data simultaneously, benefiting demanding applications and AI workloads.
Apple’s chip strategy could change quickly, however. Reports suggest the M6 generation may have a shorter lifespan than previous families as the company prepares its next-generation M7 processors. Bloomberg has also reported that Apple could introduce future MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than M6 Pro and M6 Max versions.
Even so, the M6 represents an important step for Apple Silicon. Its move to 2nm manufacturing, expanded CPU and GPU configurations and stronger AI capabilities make it a significant upgrade over the M5 and an even larger leap from the original M1 generation.
