RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – The Punjab government has approved a major project to provide clean and safe drinking water to residents of Rawalpindi, with a surface water treatment plant and water supply system to be constructed at Dadocha Dam.

The completion of the project will provide an additional 35 million gallons of water per day to Rawalpindi city and cantonment areas. The project is estimated to cost Rs36 billion and is scheduled to be completed by December 2029.

According to the Rawalpindi commissioner, 35 million gallons of clean water per day from Dadocha Dam will be added to the supply system, providing residents with clean and safe drinking water. After completion of the dam, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) will work on the transmission line and water supply network.

The construction work on Dadocha Dam has reached 92 percent completion and is being carried out under the Punjab Irrigation Department. However, the 28-kilometre transmission line from the dam to Rawalpindi, the water filtration plant and the distribution network for supplying water between the city and cantonment areas will be completed by December 2029.

The Punjab government will bear Rs18 billion of the project’s expenses related to Rawalpindi city, while the responsibility for the remaining Rs18 billion in expenses for the cantonment area will be determined at a meeting of the Punjab Cabinet, with either the federal or Punjab government expected to bear the cost.
