Pakistan end 16-year wait for Hockey World Cup victory

Pakistan ended a 16-year wait for a Hockey World Cup victory after defeating Japan 4-3 in a classification match in the Netherlands.

AMSTERDAM (Dunya News) – Pakistan defeated Japan 4-3 in a classification match at the FIH Hockey World Cup being held in the Netherlands, securing their first victory of the tournament.

The win marks Pakistan’s first victory in a Hockey World Cup match in 16 years. The national team’s previous World Cup win came in 2010, when Pakistan defeated Spain 2-1.

Pakistan failed to qualify for the 2014 Hockey World Cup, while the team could not win a single match at the 2018 edition.

Goal scorers

Against Japan, Rana Waheed scored twice for Pakistan, while Hannan Shahid and Hammad each found the net once. Pakistan held on for a 4-3 victory over Japan in the classification match.

The result gives Pakistan a much-needed boost as the team continues its campaign at the ongoing World Cup in the Netherlands.
