ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Supreme Court has directed the government to shift Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad, for medical examination and treatment, particularly for his eye condition, while issuing a series of directions concerning his healthcare, family access and security.
Justice Shahid Waheed authored the seven-page order, which said the court was mindful of the State’s constitutional and legal obligation to safeguard the life, health, dignity and security of persons in custody. The court observed that imprisonment does not deprive a prisoner of humane treatment and necessary medical care.
The Supreme Court directed the government to shift Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital within two days. In coordination with the hospital administration, authorities were ordered to constitute a medical board comprising a physician, general surgeon, internal medicine specialist, eye specialist and cardiologist.
The court also allowed Imran Khan’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, to remain associated with his medical examination and treatment.
The government was ordered to submit the complete medical record of Imran Khan before the court, including all medical tests and reports, prescriptions, medical opinions, examination reports and details of treatment administered since his arrest.
Authorities must also provide details of all meetings held between Imran Khan and his family members and lawyers during the preceding three months. The government has further been directed to submit complete details of all cases in which he is accused, arrested, facing trial, or has been convicted and sentenced.
The court rejected the contention that sufficient medical information had already been provided, observing that the document presented by the government was merely a synopsis of his ailments and treatment.

The Advocate General had conceded that there was no legal impediment to providing the prisoner and his family with copies of medical test reports, prescriptions, examination reports, treatment details and doctors’ opinions.
The Supreme Court also directed the government to facilitate a meeting between Imran Khan and his family once a week and allow him to speak with his sons by telephone twice a week.
The expenses of treatment and facilities provided at Shifa International Hospital will be borne by Imran Khan or his family.
At the same time, the court imposed restrictions on the use of the medical facilities. Until the next hearing, Imran Khan’s family members, political party members and lawyers have been barred from sharing his health condition or medical reports with the media or public.
The PTI and Imran Khan’s family have also been directed to ensure that no public gathering takes place within Shifa International Hospital. The court further barred Imran Khan or anyone associated with him from using his medical reports or health information for political gain.
The court warned that any violation of its directions could result in the immediate withdrawal of the facilities granted under the order. The government has also been directed to ensure adequate security throughout Imran Khan’s stay at the hospital.
The complete medical reports concerning his examination and treatment at Shifa International Hospital will be submitted to the Supreme Court at the next hearing.
The matter has been kept part-heard and fixed for hearing on September 16, 2026.
