MUZAFFARABAD (Muhammad Aslam Mir) – The electoral process for the 2026 general elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir has concluded with the announcement of results from two constituencies in Bagh, where the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won one seat each.
Following the Bagh results, the PML-N’s total tally has risen to 25 seats, making it the largest parliamentary party, while the PPP stands second with 12 seats.
In Bagh’s LA-15 Central Bagh, PPP’s young candidate Sardar Zia Qamar emerged victorious, while PML-N candidate Sardar Mir Akbar Khan won LA-16 Eastern Bagh.
The results were announced after repolling at 23 polling stations in the two constituencies, completing the electoral process in Bagh.
During the repolling at nine polling stations in LA-15 Central Bagh, PPP’s Sardar Zia Qamar defeated PML-N candidate Mushtaq Minhas to secure the seat, marking a significant political gain for the PPP in Bagh.
Meanwhile, in LA-16 Eastern Bagh, PML-N’s Sardar Mir Akbar Khan won with 20,793 votes against PPP’s Sardar Qamar Zaman, who secured 16,963 votes. Mir Akbar Khan won the seat with a margin of 3,830 votes.
With the results from both Bagh constituencies, the PML-N’s position in forming the government in the AJK Legislative Assembly has further strengthened. The party now holds 25 seats, while the PPP is the second-largest party with 12 seats.
According to sources, despite the completion of a major phase of the electoral process, by-elections are still pending in seven constituencies in Rawalakot and Sudhanoti. The final political and parliamentary picture will become clearer after polling in these constituencies is completed.
The PML-N has consistently performed strongly during the various phases of the 2026 elections and secured the highest number of seats. The PPP has also won several key constituencies, maintaining its position as a strong opposition force in the assembly.
The Bagh results are considered particularly significant because the region has traditionally held considerable political influence in AJK politics.
The victory of PPP’s young candidate Sardar Zia Qamar in LA-15 and PML-N’s Sardar Mir Akbar Khan in LA-16 gave both major parties one seat each in Bagh.
Political circles say the upcoming by-elections in seven constituencies of Rawalakot and Sudhanoti will play an important role in determining the new government’s parliamentary strength and the opposition’s position.
With 25 seats, the PML-N has a clear advantage in forming the government, while the PPP, with 12 seats, is positioned to play an effective opposition role in the assembly.
