YouTube tightens monetization requirements for new creators

Updated on:

YouTube has tightened monetization requirements for new creators, doubling the watch-hour and Shorts-view thresholds.

Web Desk (Dunya News) — YouTube has announced stricter requirements for new creators seeking to earn income from its platform. Under the new policy, creators will need to achieve more watch hours or Shorts views than previously required to join the YouTube Partner Program and earn revenue from advertisements and YouTube Premium.

According to Google-owned YouTube, the new requirements will apply to new applicants from February 1, 2027. Under the new policy, new creators will need to have accumulated 8,000 eligible watch hours during the previous 365 days or 20 million eligible YouTube Shorts views during the previous 90 days.

Previously, creators needed 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views to join the YouTube Partner Program, meaning both targets have now been doubled.

However, YouTube has not changed the minimum subscriber requirement. New creators will still need at least 1,000 subscribers to qualify for the YouTube Partner Program.

More than 3 million creators worldwide are currently earning revenue from their videos through the YouTube Partner Program.

The new policy will apply to creators submitting new applications to join the program from February 1, 2027.
