(Web Desk) - Residents and visitors in Glasgow were left stunned after a giant flying dragon resembling Syrax from HBO’s popular fantasy series House of the Dragon was seen soaring above the city ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The eight-metre-long dragon model flew over the River Clyde, the SEC Armadillo and the OVO Hydro, creating a spectacle that appeared to bring the fictional world of Westeros to life.
The flying model is an exact replica of Syrax, the dragon associated with Rhaenyra Targaryen in the series. It was reportedly created using 3D scans from the production of House of the Dragon to give it a highly realistic appearance.
Fourteen specialists spent three months working on the project, putting in around 3,000 hours to complete the giant model. Weighing just 13 kilogrammes, the dragon was constructed from carbon fibre, aluminium and specialised foam.
The model features 23 moving parts, including its wings, head and tail, allowing it to mimic the movements of a living creature. A propulsion system installed in its legs enables the dragon to take flight.
Organisers said the project was designed to welcome visitors to Glasgow for the 2026 Commonwealth Games while showcasing the combination of sport, advanced technology and fantasy.
The Commonwealth Games began on July 23, with coverage of the sporting events being made available to viewers through HBO Max, while TNT Sports is providing the broadcast coverage.
