China builds world's largest railway station in just 38 months

(Web Desk) - China has completed the construction of the world's largest railway station in just 38 months, using a massive workforce and advanced engineering technology.

Named Chongqing East Railway Station, the new transport hub covers an area of 1.22 million square metres—roughly equivalent to 170 football fields—making it the largest railway station in the world by area.

Located in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing, the station is an engineering marvel. It is reported to be six times larger than Grand Central Terminal and 15 times larger than Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, Europe's largest railway station.

The sprawling complex is even larger than some small towns and covers more than twice the area of Vatican City.

The station features 29 platforms, 15 railway tracks, and an eight-storey structure. Its roof is supported by a 16,500-tonne steel tube truss, while the 400-metre-long platforms are designed to accommodate China's longest high-speed trains and handle up to 16,000 passengers per hour during peak periods.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the project is its location. The station was built on top of a mountain in Chongqing, a city known for its rugged, mountainous terrain, making the construction of such a massive transportation hub particularly challenging.

According to Chinese media, engineers first levelled the site by cutting through and blasting sections of the mountain before construction began.

The project required approximately 2 million cubic metres of concrete and 366,000 tonnes of steel. At its peak, around 40,000 workers, supported by robotic machinery and advanced construction technology, worked together to complete the record-breaking station.
