Khamenei's coffin transferred to Karbala as thousands pay last tribute

According to Iranian media, funeral prayers for the late leader were first held at the shrine of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf

KARBALA (Dunya News) - The body of Iran's late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been transferred from the holy Iraqi city of Najaf to Karbala, where hundreds of thousands of mourners gathered at the shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) to pay their final respects.

According to Iranian media, funeral prayers for the late leader were first held at the shrine of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf, attended by massive crowds of mourners.

Following the prayers, his body was taken in a funeral procession to Karbala, where another funeral prayer was offered at the shrine of Imam Hussein (AS).

Religious ceremonies, including recitations of the Holy Quran, elegies and mourning gatherings, continued throughout the night as mourners from Iran and Iraq paid tribute to the late leader.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the Iraqi prime minister and other senior officials attended the funeral processions and prayers in both Najaf and Karbala.

Many mourners carried the national flags of Iran and Iraq during the ceremonies.

Under the official schedule, Ayatollah Khamenei's body will be returned to Iran on Thursday for burial in his hometown of Mashhad, where he will be laid to rest within the courtyard of the shrine of Imam Reza (AS).
