TEL AVIV (Web Desk) - Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz has claimed that they targeted Iran's late supreme leader Ali Khamenei because he was leading a plan to destroy Israel.

Katz reiterated his warning that any Iranian leader who promotes such actions would be eliminated, adding that Israel remains fully prepared at all times to defend itself against any threat.

According to Al Jazeera Media Network, Israel's Channel 13 reported that Katz made the remarks in response to the funeral procession currently taking place in Tehran.

Earlier, Katz had also stated that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son and successor of Ali Khamenei, was also a potential target. The remarks drew a strong protest from Tehran.

Responding to the statement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that US President Donald Trump had promised to keep "his proxies in Tel Aviv" under control.

Araghchi warned that if Israel ignored what he described as its "master's" instructions, Iran would "teach Israel a lesson."
