Lahore airport to close daily for three hours amid monsoon safety measures

Updated on:

Lahore airport runways will close daily from 5am to 8am until Sept 15 due to increased bird activity during monsoon, while flights will operate outside restricted hours.

LAHORE (Web Desk) – The Allama Iqbal International Airport will suspend commercial flight operations on both runways for three hours each day over the next 70 days as a precautionary measure during the monsoon season, the Pakistan Airports Authority announced on Wednesday.

According to the aviation authority, both runways will remain closed daily from 5:00am to 8:00am from July 5 to September 15 due to increased bird activity around the airport during monsoon months.

The PAA said bird movement in and around the airport, particularly at altitudes below 3,000 feet, rises significantly during the rainy season, increasing potential risks for aircraft during takeoff and landing.

Pilots have been advised to remain extra vigilant during arrival and departure operations, while airlines have also been instructed to carry sufficient fuel to manage possible delays caused by ground or airborne holding.

The authority clarified that scheduled commercial flights will continue operating outside the restricted hours, while emergency landings will be facilitated if required.

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued to inform airlines and flight operators about the temporary operational changes.

The PAA reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest aviation safety standards while minimizing disruption for passengers and airline operators.

Meanwhile, a fresh spell of monsoon rains is expected to begin across Pakistan in the first week of July. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in Lahore from July 1 to July 6.
